On Self-Reliance

In Emerson's essay "On Self-reliance,"  he describes and talks about how a person can be successful if they can depend on themselves. The tittle and his thesis are connected. Every statement he makes goes back to his thesis, which is that the best you, requires discipline which in other words is self-reliance. Emerson supported his main idea with his tone, diction, and syntax.
To begin with, Emerson's tone was powerful. The feeling he gave to the essay was very confident, and that shows how he was ready to write this essay. For Emerson to write this essay, he had to be self-reliant himself. This doesn't only benefit the reader but Emerson himself. The essay was motivational on finding our won personal identity. For example Emerson wrote "To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in  your private heart is true for all men" What he saying is that you must give value to your own ideas and ways of thinking, and not expect other people to agree with you. By doing this you can be able to find your own personal identity.
The words that Emerson uses are written in the old style of the English Language. However we still get his main point. He talks about religion, and involves God in it, but he sees God as a fundamental relationship. In my opinion, Emerson uses uses God because at the time many people were religious and they were trying to find themselves, for example in a church. But Emerson purpose was to let them know, not to look outside the box for their own identity. This also could be the reason when he talks about politics and the things we are allowed to do and not to do. "Another sort of false prayers are our regrets." Emerson said. This means, when most people feel disappointed over somebody or something, and they are going back to this regret for any decision or even in their daily lives, they are not being self-reliant, instead they are using the regret to fit in society.
Emerson's syntax is always going back to the title and thesis. Most of his sentences make you think deeply about your self. He starts on of his last paragraphs with "Society is a wave. The wave moves onward, but the water of which it is composed does not." What I found significant about this quote is that when a wave is create it, the water moves in a forward direction, however not all the water moves in a forward direction. This can be a a reflection of human beings. For example when someone has an idea, people can decide weather they follow them or not. At the end all human beings move in different directions and nobody can express your thoughts better than you can.
In conclusion, Emerson is saying that many people are so focused on trying to be someone else that they have forgotten about themselves and who truly are as a person just to fit in society. Emerson's essay is about making people realize and open their minds to fully understand the importance of their own self in society.
